Medication Administration Technician (MAT) class at MedNoc is a 2-day course composed of 16 hours of training. Our MAT program is offered at our Oklahoma City campus. This MAT course is approved by the Department of Human Services (DHS) under the Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS). The initial MAT training must be 16 hours in length and must be renewed annually by attending an 8-hour update course. As a certified MAT in Oklahoma, you can work and pass medications in Assisted Living, Group Homes, and homes for Disabled people.  The MAT certification does not give the holder the authority to work in a Long-Term Care facility such as Nursing. The MAT course must be completed on two consecutive days. To be become a certified Medication Technician in Oklahoma you must attend and successfully complete MAT training program approved by Oklahoma Department of Human Services,  Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS) Department.

Medication Administration Technician (MAT-Initial). 

Course Description:

The Initial Medication Administration Technician (MAT) program is a 16-clock hour course completed in 2 consecutive days. The MAT class at MTC is structured and led by a licensed nurse or a pharmacist who is an instructor. The MAT course trains the student how to safely Administer Medications, Infection Control, Checking Vital Signs, Monitoring Clients, and Documentation. As MAT certified, you can work and pass medications in an Assisted Living, Memory Care Facilities, Group Homes, and Homes for Disabled people. You can also provide private care to help a client with medications. The MAT certification does not allow the holder to work in a Long-Term Care facility in Oklahoma. MAT certification must be renewed annually by attending a minimum 6-hour MAT Update class. The Medication Administration Technician (MAT) program is approved by the Department of Human Services (DHS) under the Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS). Upon successful completion of this program and passing, the student shall be certified as MAT in the State of Oklahoma by OKDHS-DDS.

Class: 12 hours

Skills lab: 4 hours. 

Prerequisites:

  1. High School Diploma, GED or other Equivalency, or higher.
  2. CNA Certification. (Must be current with no abuse notations)
  3. 18 years of age.
  4. Have not had a suspended or revoked Certification in healthcare.

Admission Requirements:

  1. Complete an Application.
  2. Two forms of government-issued Identification; (One form of ID with a photograph such as current State Identification Card or Driver’s License and Social Security Card)
  3. A signed copy of an Affidavit of Lawful Presence stating citizenship or alien status.

Successful Completion:

  1. Complete 3 Exams with minimum Score of 85% on each exam.
  2. Complete 3 Skills; with a Score of 100% on each skill.
  1. Vital signs: BP, HR, Temp, RR.
  2. Handwashing.
  3. Medications pass to 5 patients on the Med Cart.

NOTE: The student who is unable to obtain a score of 85% after taking the test two times, must retake the class on a different date. 

Certificate:

A student who has met all the requirements and completed MAT Initial or Renewal training shall be issued with a Certificate Number C-0226, which is a Certificate of Medication Administration Training by MedNoc Training College. MTC shall submit to the Developmental Disabilities Services Division (DDSD) Human Resource Development Unit, the documentation of the students completed MAT training within three days of the completed training.

MAT-Update is an 8-hour class required annually to renew MAT certification in Oklahoma. A licensed nurse or a pharmacist instructs the MAT Renewal Course. The Medication Administration Technician update satisfies the required continuing education. The student must present a copy of the unexpired MAT certificate, and if MAT certification has expired, it should not be more than 60 days. If the MAT certification has expired more than 60 days, the student must complete 16 hours of Initial MAT training.   

Total Training hours for this program = 8 hours

Class: 5 hours.

Skills lab: 3 hours.

 Prerequisite:

  • Unexpired MAT Certificate or if MAT Certification that has been expired less than 60 days.
  • If MAT certification has been expired for more than 60 days, the Initial MAT must be taken.
  • Current CNA certification with no abuse notations.

Admission Requirements:

  1. Complete the application.

MedNoc MAT Training Program Outlook

  1. The course must be offered by a licensed nurse who can either be an LPN or RN.
  2. The student must satisfactorily complete 12 hours of training.
  3. The student/ trainee must score a minimum of 85% on all tests. If a student fails to achieve a score of 85% after taking the exam two times, the class must be repeated.
  4. Pass an OSBI background check.

As MAT certified, you can be employed to work and pass medications in the following places:

  1. Group Home.
  2. Assisted Living.
  3. Memory Care unit.
  4. Independent Living.

It is important to know that unlike CMA who can work in Long-term care facilities such as nursing home and pass medications, MAT certification does not give you the privilege to work in Long-term care facilities.
